There is something especially beautiful about photographing maternity sessions at the beach outside the height of summer.
For Lindsey and Daniel’s maternity session, we headed to the Adelaide coast on a beautiful afternoon surrounded by ocean, sand and a wonderful display of zinnias. The warm earthy tones of the landscape and the little pops of colour from the flowers created such a beautiful setting for this season of their lives.
While summer might be the season most people associate with the beach, I actually love photographing Adelaide’s coastline throughout autumn, winter and spring. The beaches are often quieter, the light can be beautifully soft and the landscape changes with each season.
And sometimes, you discover something completely unexpected, like a stretch of coastline covered in beautiful zinnias.
Adelaide has so many beautiful beaches along its coastline, and each one has its own character.
During the warmer months, beaches can be busy with families, swimmers and holidaymakers. Outside summer, the coastline feels completely different. There are fewer people around, the light is softer and there is often a more peaceful, natural feeling to the landscape.
Autumn brings warmer earthy tones and beautiful golden light. Winter can bring dramatic skies and soft, muted colours, while spring brings new growth and flowers along the coastline.
For a maternity session, I love that sense of changing seasons. Your pregnancy is such a fleeting chapter, and having the landscape around you change with the seasons creates another little layer of meaning in the photographs.
The zinnias were such a beautiful surprise during Lindsey and Daniel’s session.
Zinnias belong to the daisy family and their delicate flowers brought a wonderful softness and colour to the otherwise coastal landscape. Against the ocean and warm tones of the beach, they created a beautiful natural setting for maternity photographs.
I love finding these little pockets of beauty along Adelaide’s coastline. You don’t always need a traditionally manicured location to create beautiful photographs. Sometimes the most interesting places are the wild, unexpected ones that change throughout the year.
My approach to maternity photography is relaxed and connection focused. I want your photographs to feel like you, rather than a collection of poses that could belong to anyone.
For Lindsey and Daniel, we spent time walking together, enjoying the surroundings and simply being present with one another. Alongside the quieter moments between them, we took time for portraits of Lindsey and allowed the beach and flowers to become part of the story.
I love including the environment in my maternity photographs. The ocean, sand, sky and seasonal flowers all help tell the story of when these photographs were taken.
Years from now, it won’t just be the photographs of your growing bump that bring this time back to you. It will be the colours, the light, the flowers and the feeling of being together, waiting for your baby.
If you’re considering a beach maternity session in Adelaide, don’t feel that you need to wait for summer.
Autumn, winter and spring can be wonderful times for beach photography, particularly if you prefer a quieter and more natural setting. With so many beautiful beaches along the Adelaide coastline, there are plenty of opportunities to find somewhere that feels peaceful and suits the style of your session.
I particularly love the way the coastline changes throughout the year. One location can look completely different from season to season, with different flowers, colours and light creating a completely new backdrop.
For maternity sessions, I generally recommend planning your photographs around 30 to 34 weeks of pregnancy, when your bump is beautifully visible but you are hopefully still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy your session. You can read more about maternity sessions in Adelaide here.
Lindsey and Daniel’s session was such a beautiful example of why I love Adelaide’s coastline beyond the traditional summer beach season. A quiet stretch of coast, beautiful afternoon light and a field of zinnias made the perfect setting to document this special chapter before their baby arrived.
